Great Interest in the LIFE LANNER at the Eurosite annual meeting in France
In early November 2023 project manager Stefano Picchi presented the LIFE LANNER project to the participants of the Eurosite 2023 annual meeting, focusing on the theme of “identity-based conservation for large-scale nature restoration”.
The event was held in Amiens, France and included several thematic workshops, field visits and attracted nearly 120 participants from over 20 countries.
One of the highlights of the event due to the interest it aroused was the presentation of the results of the LIFE LANNER project. The main successes were illustrated, including the release of seven young falcons, equipped with GPS, using hacking techniques, the reopening of over 30 hectares of scrubland for the restoration of pastures and hunting areas for the falcons, the construction of structures for reproduction and the formation of breeding pairs, and the birth of three chicks from captive pairs.
Furthermore, it was illustrated how the project conducted a national Lanner monitoring in 2023, secured 200 electric poles to prevent electrocution, and genetically characterized the Falco biarmicus feldeggii subspecies, and increased public attention on the species. The meeting was organized by Eurosite, the European Network for Land Conservation, in collaboration with the Fédération des Conservatoires d’espaces naturels, the Conservatoire d’espaces naturels des Hauts-de-France, the Office Français de la Biodiversité and the Conservatoire du Littoral.
